Abstract
A central disturbance of vision should be suspected when an ophthalmic examination finds normal visual acuity and normal appearing anterior and posterior segments in both eyes. While the anterior visual and geniculocalcarine pathways deliver the elemental visual data from the eyes to striate cortex, the higher cortical visual areas perform the more complex interpretation of this visual information. Deficits caused by damage to these areas are characterized by abnormalities in visual processing or attention often despite otherwise relatively normal visual acuity and fields.
